After our second day at work we spent the afternoon entertaining some visitors from a local centre. Mr Barnes tells all:
On Wednesday(is it really only Wednesday?) the locals arrived in their mini bus ( four to a seat! ) to interact with us! They were a mix of genders and appeared to range in age from around 6 to 16.
One of the popular games was a local table game - carrom - which involves flicking a counter with your finger to try and pocket other counters in the four corner pockets. Our flicking skills were not equal to those of the locals and we were soundly beaten. However, after they had gone many of us continued to try and hone our limited flicking skills and some declared, " I want one!"
First we played some of the educational activities which we had brought along with us. This meant we had to talk to them! Luckily most of them were more shy than most of us!
Most of the girls were more confident than the boys when it came to chatting, explaining rules and interacting with the visitors!
Like all schools the "work" was fun but play time was even better.
Down by what we call the crocodile lake we challenged them to a test match! Sadly only eight of them wanted to play which limited our selection!
Ethan and Tom were our star bowlers but man of the match was undoubtedly Flora who hit two massive sixes over long on, one of which resulted in a lost ball! That's how you do it, boys!
The Sri Lankan star who caused our downfall was this ten year old lad who was one of the few who clearly knew all the ins and outs of the game! Sadly that includes our team too!
We were all out for 34 in the eighth over. Despite some competitive fielding from Faye Baker they passed our total in the sixth over for the loss of two wickets! This meant that they went away happy.
Writing this in a tropical thunderstorm, (sadly unlike at home, the rain does not significantly reduce the temperature ) and now it's time for bed!
Alannah what position did you play on the cricket pitch Ha ha. Hopefully you don't have too many blisters from all the hard work. Mum and I did some more unpacking today, much to my protest after not finishing until three this morning night flying again. But that's it done. You will be pleased to know the sky man has visited and your system is fully functioning ready for your return. Keep up the good work love Mum and Dad xxxx
ReplyDeleteDear Flora - so good to see you working hard lugging rubble around - just like home? Also good to see you playing cricket and losing the odd ball - just like home?
ReplyDeleteDo hope the thunderstorms are exciting - not like those at home!
Sholto passed his driving theory test today, then went fishing and caught 12- so we have a happy Sholto but no fish as he put them all back. However he is cooking our supper as we type this. Daddy not too sure about your breakfast. Archie definitely not too sure..... What about the elephants? What was Galle like? Suddenly thinking of lots of questions like what mountains did you see from the plane - did you fly over the Black Sea? What are lunch and supper like - is there lots of dahl? Look forward to seeing the next blog - we really do enjoy them. Sleep well xxxxx Mum, Dad, Archie and Sholto
Dear Jimbo,

Love Mum & Dad. !!! ;-)

Hello Ethan I can't believe how quiet the house is without you - maybe it's because Morgan has noone to talk to or annoy any more!! Looks like you are having a great time, that tuttle was huge!
