It is a tradition that a visiting AidCamps team leaves their mark on a project by creating a signature board and other art work. Emily relates what we decided to do ...
After spending such a long time working at the centre, we all thought it would be nice to leave a little something behind. With so many artists in our group, such as the senior artist Nick Bedborough, and a few other GCSE art students, we thought it'd be an excellent idea to leave our mark behind in the form of a collection of artwork on boards.
When we were first given the boards, they had to be preserved and white washed. The photo above shows Mrs Clarke's group starting off the preserving of the boards. It may not look like it, but in reality more of the paint went on the grass than on the boards!
James and our Sri Lankan friend Thivanka painted the back of one of the boards black, as this is the main board that we were designing, along with some of the teachers at the centre.
The GCSE art students also designed and painted the "millennium goals". These are to achieve universal primary education, the empowerment of women, eradication of extreme poverty and hunger, to promote gender equality, reduce child mortality, improve maternal health, combat HIV/Aids/Malaria and other diseases, ensure environmental sustainability and to promote global partnership for development.
Thivanka and Dili also helped us with the painting of the smaller boards with the goals on them.
First, the artists found photos of the goals, and sketched them onto the whitewashed boards. Using fine paintbrushes, they began to paint the smaller, more intricate details into the boards.
After a lot of paint mixing to find the right colours, we painted the boards in bright, eye catching colours so that they could be easily seen around the centre.
Along with these boards, we also decided to leave behind two boards with our names on them - another mark of the work and fundraising we've done for this project.
Last year, the students who travelled to Sri Lanka decided that their board would be made up of handprints in the shape of peacock feathers, and they would each have a handprint with their name on it.
This year, we had to make 2 boards, as we helped to complete both the second and the third floor of the centre.
We decided that our boards would both be trees, and so Ella, James Paus, Mrs Clarke, Faye and I all drew and painted the trunks, leaves and branches of the trees.
Mrs Clarke came up with the idea of adding little birds onto each of the trees. They are small blackbirds, and have yellow eyes. Any name suggestions?
This is what one of the boards looked like after the first stage of painting..
The day after painting all of the boards, we headed to the site.
Here, you can see all of the boards perched against the side of our trusty bus. With all 32 of us, including pupils, teachers and a few extras, it was quite a job to get them on!
Here's Freddie, admiring the artwork whilst wearing odd flip-flops. He's probably trying to be artistic.
Here we all are, at the site..
When we got there, there was still more work to do on the boards.
The "fine arts" group, consisting of Mrs Clarke, Ella Neil, Becky Machin, Ellie Patrick and I all had the task of copying the "Serve", "AidCamps International" and Rookwood School logos onto the boards. Trust me when I say, it's harder than it looks!
Mr Pool helped, which makes a change after leaving all of the rest of his group to do all the whitewashing! Don't worry, we covered him in paint anyway.
Becky also helped some of the teachers from the centre to finish their board, which features all of the things which Serve strive to achieve in their work.
All in all, it was quite a relaxing day. Two groups of us were painting; one group painting the boards, and the other painting the walls of the building. One group was also doing all of the hard graft, of sandsifting and carrying the tiles up the stairs to the top floor.
The fact that the centre is almost finished is incredible, and on this, our last day working on the site, we all gave 100% to make sure that the centre was as good as it possibly could be.
You'll be able to see how all of the boards and displays look finished at the opening ceremony!
I'd just like to leave a little message for my parents..
Hi Mum and Dad. Hope everything is ok at home? Hope the Presidents' Day tea went well, and I'm sorry I couldn't be there. Say hello to Coco for me? I really hope he didn't go and sneeze that kennel cough vaccine into the vet's face like last time - not good! Please don't give me curry when I get back, I beg you! We've all had enough curry here to last us a life time! I miss you and love you all a lot, and can't wait to see you on Sunday! Xxx :)
Good morning from a stormed out Hampshire. Spectacular lightning and quite loud, prolonged thunder. I couldn't tell if it was raining for the sound of the fan whirring to keep the heat at bay! It's another WOW to all of you. Emily that was a fabulous blog with fantastic photos. The artwork is wonderful. Hearty congratulations to you all for such creativity. I hope you feel very proud of what you have achieved. It will make such a difference to the local people and it's a great legacy to leave and be remembered by. My suggestion for birds is your own names - or am I lacking imagination? It's all so exciting and it may feel sad to leave, but I know I can't wait to see Joseph on Sunday. It's only two weeks or so, but it does feel like a long time. Enjoy the time you all have left, safe travels, pack carefully. Joseph, try to find all your things and bring them home: watch, camera, clothes, binoculars, sunglasses - lots to remember!!!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much Mr Knight and teachers for all your hard work with and commitment to our children. You have given them such an inspiring opportunity to do good, learn, and have a lot of fun: a rounded education indeed. You are wonderful.
Love and many congratulations to you all. Special love to Joseph - love you loads, more and most plus a billion and no returns, Mummy xxxx
Ah, the odd flip flops - we creatives are so misunderstood. Mind you, I wouldn't recommend turning up for work in odd shoes. I 'have a friend' who did that and they had to go to the shops and buy a new pair!!! Well, so many different activities for you guys - huge variety and an amazing achievement that you can look back on and say 'I did that'. G, I am assuming you were in the No Photography area doing something highly sensitive like sandsifting. Tell me, when the tasks are given out, is your first question 'am I likely to be papped?' Before you decide whether or not to do it? So, packing - no serfs to do it for you so watch how Mrs Clarke and Mrs Speed do it (although from memory, isn't one ace at it and the other one said she was terrible at it?) and feel free to bring very little back!!!!! Oh, bird names - mmmm... Nope can't think of anything - must be the heat - on the train to London now on what is going to be the hottest day of the year - 31 degrees forecast!!! Love you and can't wait to see you. Xxxx mum
ReplyDeleteGreat to see you with paintbrush in hand again James, quite the dabhand. Dad's now lining up all sorts of decorating jobs in case you have withdrawal symptoms. Is the answer to the bird name problem, Rookwoodians? We have our own bird problem here, Velma, Maud and Connie are destroying the garden, I have never known such tiresome hens. Dad out last night with Eugene, Steve Lawson and rest of Scout/Cub group, last meeting for Teddy and Fi's last meeting tonight before summer hols. Pop up tent arrived yesterday, so all go for some camping in the New Forest, how tame after Sri Lanka. Have fun in Kandy, love the sound of Temple of the Tooth, Mum x
ReplyDeleteHi Georgia
ReplyDeleteIt's a times like this where a bit of artwork is required that you could do with your brother to delegate to.
By the way - did I mention how bad I the driving and traffic is in Sri Lanka? There are some things best left unsaid.
I will see you on Sunday but if you are considering staying longer then I'm very tempted to turn your bedroom into a bedroom/snooker room. You'll still have a bed but it will be a but higher and harder than before. I'm sure you would get use to it.
Love
Chris
We are really impressed with all your hard work and how wonderful to leave the record of your visit and fundraising. The art work looks great and I hope that in 2 years time, the next group from Rookwood will have the opportunity to see your contribution. Nick we can't wait to see you on Sunday - Maria will get home from Devon round about the same time as you...let's hope that The Andover carnival will be well and truly over as the roads in the town are closed for much of the day!! I'm guessing that, judging by the comments above, we shouldn't put curry on the menu?! See you soon, love Mum, Dad, Matt and Maria xxx
ReplyDeleteHi All, hope that you are all incredibly proud of all of your hard work on the centre and I'm sure that you are all looking forward to the Opening today. It has been fantastic to be able to read the blogs on a daily basis - they have been both entertaining and, of course, informative!!! I'm really disturbed, however, that you decided to paint Mr Pool and hope that he got his own back on you. Have a lovely rest of the week and a safe trip home. Emily - the curry is already in the slow cooker and will be incredibly tender and flavourful. I am sure that you will all spend most of next week sleeping. Love Mum, Dad and Coco XXXX
ReplyDeleteHi All,
ReplyDeleteWhat a great last days work you had yesterday. I like the boards you are all painting, and Tacha - next time we are decorating anything at home you are def going to be given a paintbrush. Perhaps you can invite some of your friends around to help you? I promise to feed and water you all with Tea, bananas (bigger ones tho), biscuits and huge portion of curry with rice for dinner afterwards.
You should have painted Rooks instead of Blackbirds and then the names of the birds would have been a done deal. Or one Rook and one Raven or Jackdaw.
I have really enjoyed following all your antics and seeing the work as it progresses. Am very proud of you all and I am sure none of you will ever forget this trip, the sights you have seen and the people you have meet.
Looking forward to seeing you on Sunday Tacha - dad has already made a study plan for you, before you go off on Tour next Saturday. You have a lot of revision to do - just sayin. I have been researching rollup pianos so we can send you off with a keyboard to play and practice for that Grade 8 exam you have coming up soon ;-)
Huge Hugs and cant wait to see you again,
Mor, Far og Rødemis (Og Leedy & Del) xxxxxx
What stunning artwork, so bold and colourful. Thank you again for a wonderful blog. What will you all do when you are back home? Ah yes revision. What a good idea a study plan for the holidays - those mocks are not that far away. I'm sure GCSEs seem very far away at the moment; but hopefully spending time in Sri Lanka will help you all appreciate your education at Rookwood and the opportunities that will open up for you. Enjoy your final day and embrace everything around you. Fantastic memories and experiences that will stay with you forever. Dear Joe, all our love and best wishes for a safe journey back to the UK Dad, Julia, Hooba, Max and Lucy xxxxx
ReplyDeleteWhat wonderful memories, and what wonderful work you have all done to finish the centre so beautifully. I'm sure the children of Sri Lanka will remember you all and I know you will all remember this trip. You should all be so proud of yourself - teachers and pupils, because without you our children would not have got to go to such a wonderful country and such a fantastic opportunity. Enjoy Kandy, and your rest time before you come home, I'm really looking forward to picking you up in Corfu on Monday. I have a sun lounger with your name on it! Love you lots, travel safe xxxxxxx
ReplyDeleteAll looks amazing. Has Freddie H been painting? Hope so as we have plenty more at home and it isn't Warhammer! Enjoy your last day. You will all be aclimatised for your return - not quite Sri Lanka standards but very hot and humid for UK. Looking forward to hearing from you in person, Fred. Lots of love Mum x
ReplyDeleteHey Chelsea hope the painting was good as you will need to be doing lots of it over here when you come. Dad has been to the DVD shop and got you loads for when you come out. We are getting ready to come and puck you up from the airport soon.
ReplyDeleteToyin has posted a nice video of you on the death slide babe hah aha. Looking good.
Libby is watching haunted house all the time as she had a guy like father doug on the plane with her.

Well done everyone! What did you call the birds in the end: Rookie and Woodie? It all looks super and should should all be incredibly proud of yourselves. We are looking forward to seeing you on Sunday, Flora, and hearing all about this incredible trip - but don't worry owing to weather conditions (thunderstorms and very hot can you believe it?!) the rendering has been postponed so you won't be expected to set to here as soon as you are home!! Lots and lots of love - Mum, Dad and the boys xxxx
ReplyDeleteLooks like you are all working very hard to achieve the died line of tomorrow and the opening ceremony. Alannah hope you have had a great time and not dreading coming home to much. I have taken Monday off so you and I can go and do something if you feel up to it. I have bought in some coconut water and will make a curry for you coming home on Sunday LOL ;-). Only kidding I guess you will want some comfort food. Had the mother of all thunder storms last night but the MET man reckons tomorrow is going to be interesting and a weather warning had been issued so have to wait and see. Well gorgeous daughter I shall leave you in peace and look forward to seeing you on Sunday. Both Mum and I have missed you loads. See you Sunday all our love mum and dad xxxx
ReplyDeleteComing up to the finishing line now, all look very good and hope you have a wonderful grand opening ceremony. Love you, Dad. See u on Sunday.
